Flying to Tassie

We are exploring Tasmania this week as our family Christmas present. After all of our recent flights, we have a good airport routine. Schedule flights around nap times, run around the terminal until boarding, and have emergency biscuits on hand if CZ loses all patience with sitting. It certainly helps that traveling domestically in Australia is so much easier than back in the States. Security is much more relaxed, and the employees are generally in a better mood all around.

We checked 1 big bag plus our Bumbleride, and then we carried on a diaper bag, small roller, and the small backpack from our Kelty Pathfinder, which was in the large checked bag.  Ideally, we want to carry on as little as possible so we have more free hands but we don’t feel comfortable checking the cameras and other valuables.

It took us 4 hours total from leaving the house to landing in Hobart.  I definitely got a nostalgic thrill walking down the gangway into the smallest airport I’d ever seen. EZ claims Flagstaff, AZ was smaller.

After a seal encounter on the baggage carousel, we made our way to the taxi line, and quickly discovered that car seats in cabs is a big city thing.  We declined several offers to “nurse” Cecilia, which is putting her in a lap for the ride, so we opted for a shuttle bus instead. A twenty minute, nausea filled ride for the whole family brought us a few blocks away from our place.

This beautiful car was the most exciting thing we walked past on our way to the Airbnb accommodation, but the place itself is a gorgeous, renovated church schoolhouse.  EZ described the spacious studio as “my dream house,” and it certainly has a unique charm to its high ceilings and open space.

We dropped our bags, and headed towards the wharf for lunch.  EZ wanted to try the fish and chips at Fish Frenzy, and I’m glad she did.  The tempura battered blue eye was incredible. Following lunch, we enjoyed a beautiful afternoon exploring Hobart, and are looking forward to the rest of our stay in Tassie.
