Watson’s Bay – Great Beach for Kids!

Coming to Sydney in the summertime, we enjoyed the search for our favorite baby-friendly beach. We started off with iconic Bondi Beach, and made our way south along the coastal walk to Coogee via Tamarama, Bronte, and Clovelly. After completing the walk in both directions, we took the ferry across the harbour to Manly beach. We made a couple return trips Tamarama, with our beach shelter, and eventually, we caught the ferry through the harbor to Watson’s Bay.

Watson’s Bay instantly made our favorites list because it offers beautiful coastal walks, as well as Camp Cove. The small, family-friendly beach boasts calm water that is perfect for swimming. It is a 5-10 minute walk from the wharf through charming neighborhood streets. EZ and I enjoy bringing our goggles for longer swims in the cove’s clear water, while CZ naps in the tent. To the north of the cove, you can follow the walk to one of the lighthouses; just beware of sunbathers at Lady Bay, Sydney’s most famous nude beach.

We forego the overpriced snacks at the beach stand, and instead, stop by the Fish Chippery for some of Sydney’s most famous fish and chips. Doyle’s Takeaway is definitely the more famous option, but we prefer the thick fillets and light fluffy breading of the Fish Chippery attached to Watson’s Bay Hotel. There is a larger park with several picnic tables to enjoy lunch nearby, but stay on the offensive in case a seagull gets hungry.

The lovely, scenic coastal walks in the area, with amazing views of the city, the Gap, a couple of lighthouses, and the channel between North Head and South Head are more than enough to keep us coming back.  However, the best part, which we discovered on a recent whale watching cruise, is that you can see the humpbacked whales during their annual migrations! The whale migrate North in the winter from June to September and come back by Sydney in the spring. Rumor has it, there are good vantage points on both the North and South Head peninsulas, which we look forward to investigating.
